Mortality in Portugal from 2009 to 2021 and the covid-19 impact

This plot shows the total number of deaths per 1000 residents per year in Portugal.

Dark blue indicate deaths attributed to covid-19 and light blue all other deaths. We note that this representation was designed to be adequate when the last year is not complete.

In the top panel, the last bar corresponds to 2021 for which there is not yet complete information. Thus, we have in grey the expected deaths for the remaining of the year assuming a daily occurrence identical to the daily average for the year.

The bottom panel shows the total number of deaths per year from January 1st to December 7th, the last day for which we have records in 2021.

Two comments about the plot (i) covid-19 has a noticeable impact in the total number of deaths, and (ii) there is a slight increasing tendency on the number of deaths per year and per 1000 residents.
